Our first Basque Festival!!
On Saturday, May 2nd, 2026, I, Dulce, along with two other interns, Kevin and Andres, attended the 48th Annual Fresno Basque Festival. From start to finish, Basque cultural elements enlightened us with a new perspective on the historical communities of Fresno. While setting up, mass began. Toot-toot-too… A sudden blast of trumpets captivated our ears. Tap tap tap… A large group of costumed community members, led by Father Antton Egiguren, walked in. During mass, Monique delighted us with her voice. Truly a spectacle! Eventually, the scent of grilled meat made our stomachs rumble. The food was ready! As everyone lined up to pick up a plate of food, intrigued by our timeline of the 11 Community-Identified Chinatown Fresno Cultures, several individuals came to talk to us and provided us with information regarding the Basque Hotel, located once upon a time here, in Chinatown Fresno. They shared stories about going to the hotel as kids and how delicious the restaurant was. One individual even mentioned that he knew the owners of the original hotel and restaurant. Seeing and hearing the different music and dances was a remarkable and amazing experience. With kids having fun, running left and right while playing with a bouncy ball, an ice-cream truck stopped by and provided us with a sweet treat. The clock marked four, and Chorizo Sandwiches began to be served. Bidding farewell to Monique, we packed up and left. An amazing, eye-opening experience!
