From the 1850s through the 1950s, segregation marginalized ethnic communities, moving them across the railroad tracks into the Chinatown area. It became home to eleven identified cultures including people from Africa, Armenia, Basque countries, China, Greece, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Portugal, and Russia (Volga Germans).
Through the work of the Center, we seek to cultivate a deeper understanding of the eleven origin cultures and their histories. We look forward to building an appreciation and respect for these culturally rich and diverse legacies and communities.
